I was asked to give a talk to some parents at my kid’s school, so I thought I’d share this with you, too. I’ve broken it down into 5 Scary Reasons and 5 Fun Reasons because the truth is both fun and scary. And because unless we are willing to stare our fears down and face them, it’s almost impossible to have fun!

The Top 10 Reasons Why Every Kid
Needs Organic Food

What’s Good for Your Health
Is Good for the Planet!
We are in a constant cycle of exchange between nature and our bodies—the air we breathe in and out, the food we eat and expel, the products we put on our skin and surround ourselves with and then dispose of, the medicines we take, which then permeate our bodies and leave our bodies, as well. We now know that there is an impact on everything, between everything. It’s science, physics (especially!), and medicine. It’s also philosophy.

Texas (South by Southwest Eco),
Here I Come!
I’ve always wanted to go to South by Southwest (or “SXSW.” as it’s known by insiders). And you all know me, I don’t really care about being seen or networking, I would just want to roam and rock out at the music part! So when I heard there was a new SXSW Eco, I was intrigued. And when they asked me to be on a panel, I said yes—especially because the panel topic is near and dear to my heart: the intersection between the environment and health.

GE Foods Shorten Life, Cause Tumors
Says First-Ever Long-Term Study
BREAKING NEWS: by Marcia Ishii-Eiteman, senior scientist at Pesticide Action Network. Very big news exploded across the papers yesterday: Eating genetically engineered (GE) corn has been strongly linked to serious health effects—including mammary tumors and kidney and liver damage. Here’s what you need to know.

The Drought Diet

We live on corn, and as a consequence, our food budgets are extremely vulnerable to weather-driven crashes in the corn market. Let’s talk about how you can tailor your diet to these new drought conditions. Here are six simple steps that can pay off big for your health and for our planet while taking it easy on your wallet.

Why Organic?
by guest blogger Coach Mark Smallwood. The latest media buzz over the Stanford study is a bit of a non-event here at the Rodale Institute. The study asks the question, “Are Organic Foods Safer or Healthier than Conventional Alternatives?” It is a good question, one that many citizens. But, the fact is the researchers didn’t really answer it.

Dangerous Chemicals Are Everywhere
by guest blogger Deirdre Imus. Amid some recent dour news about ingredients in personal care products causing diabetes and muscle weakness, Johnson & Johnson provided a rare bright light when the company announced plans to remove dangerous chemicals—such as formaldehyde—from its shampoos, lotions, facial cleansers, and more. It is a sweeping gesture, and one that other companies would be wise to mimic.

What Your Gut Is Telling You
When I look back at all the biggest mistakes I’ve made in my life, I can clearly remember a moment when I consciously overrode what my gut was telling me. Our “gut” used in this respect seems more like a mystical, spiritual force that may or may not truly exist (although looking down I can see mine does!). But it should be remembered that our actual guts are filled with living organisms whose importance to the health of our entire body has been undervalued if not downright ignored
Scratch
Raised on America’s first organic farm, Scratch author Maria Rodale learned how to make everyday favorites from, yes, scratch — the way you remember them; the way they turn out best.
