by guest blogger Maya Rodale. My listening to Christmas music is usually limited to whatever is playing in the shops or whatever is on the soundtrack to holiday-themed romantic comedies, which means it’s basically limited to that Mariah Carey song (you know the one I’m talking about!). But these are the very few that I have purchased and played around the house to get into the spirit of things…

First Kisses: What I Learned from
Bruce, Kenny, Jason, and the Avetts
by guest blogger Maya Rodale. This summer, I was lucky to see a few great concerts. In the midst of all the rocking and rolling and singing along with the crowd, I discovered this truth: You haven’t really heard a song until you’ve heard it played LOUD in a stadium with 20,000 people singing along. I also gleaned some insights about being an artist…or just getting a job done right…. And about writing kisses and love stories.

The Summer I Saw Bruce
Springsteen Four Times
You could say I began and ended the summer of 2012 with Bruce. I started with the two shows over the Easter weekend at Madison Square Garden (the beginning of my most happy season, summer). And I ended it with the shows this past Sunday and Monday of Labor Day weekend in Philadelphia. And those last two shows were amazing.

A Visit to My Back Porch:
Dar Williams
It was about 18 years ago. I was driving in my car with the radio on, listening to WMUH my local favorite college station. I heard a song. Time stopped. It was a beautiful woman’s voice singing “When I was a boy.” These lyrics stopped me in my tracks. So, it is my total pleasure to have Dar Williams as a guest on my back porch today.

Plus 3 Great New Bands!

For one thing, it’s a great way to discover awesome new bands that have the stamp of approval from bands you already love. Plus, it’s one of those times when the audience really matters, and it just feels good to support people living the dream, or trying to.

My Top 10 Bruce Springsteen Songs
Ok, I know there is going to be debate about this or disagreement so let me say up front this is MY list, based on MY life and I’d love to hear your lists!

Bruce Springsteen and the
Church of Rock ‘n’ Roll
At age 50, I was a Bruce Springsteen concert virgin. And when I finally got to see him live I felt the ecstatic joy of feeling union with the divine through music, rhythm, poetry—powerful words that peel away the differences between us and get to the center of what makes us human and alive and in love.

The Dance of Life and Love
The best kind of love comes from within and radiates joy, respect, and pleasure to everyone around you. Sometimes I think that’s our real job on this earth—really learning how to love, and listening to that voice to the exclusion of all others.
Scratch
Raised on America’s first organic farm, Scratch author Maria Rodale learned how to make everyday favorites from, yes, scratch — the way you remember them; the way they turn out best.
