What is a nuthatch? It’s an adorable little songbird native to North America. What is Nuthatch? It’s an American-made, ethically fashioned, natural-fiber clothing brand named after the bird.
Like a good number of its namesakes, Nuthatch is based in a scenic seaside town in Maine. There, in a simple yet highly creative workshop, the company employs local expert seamstresses to create timeless clothing from linen, cotton, silk, and other natural fibers. Every fabric is selected from the best mills and chosen for its quality and natural beauty. Nuthatch’s unwavering high standards mean that each garment is crafted to perfection. And best of all, the pieces are washed to break them in and create a soft, easy-to-care-for garment you’ll want to wear every day.
Beth Bowley, the founder of Nuthatch, has worked in fashion for over 25 years. A graduate of Parsons School of Design, she worked in the New York City fashion scene for more than two decades before embarking on the ecofashion adventure of a lifetime: moving back to her home state of Maine and exploring a more local fashion concept. There, Nuthatch was born with a focus on ownership and understanding of its supply chain and manufacturing.
Beth was inspired by a need and a desire: the need to know that our fashion choices are friendly to people and the planet and the desire to dress in flexible, elegant, style. According to Beth, she wanted to create a truly ecofriendly fashion brand, and that meant, “making the best choices available to achieve the project goals.” This meant using no toxic dyes, choosing only the best fabrics, and making everything—yes everything—washable. “No dry cleaning—ever!” Beth also wants her workshop to embrace and support the local community.
In a nutshell, Nuthatch is the epitome of casual and sophisticated elegance, with every design making a classic addition to any wardrobe that’s kind to both you and the planet. Fall in love with your next Nuthatch tunic, dress, or top on Rodale’s today.
